Overconsumption of powder coating

Why waste money where it can be saved? Although powder paint is a relatively cheap painting material, you should not spend too much of it. Too thick a layer of powder coating can form a defect in the form of “orange peel”.

Spray distance

The efficiency of applying powder paint depends on the distance between the metal and the nozzle of the spray gun, including her shedding The further you spray, the less charged the paint will be, therefore, it will crumble more actively. A short distance can work in different ways – the polymer film will turn out to be too thick, will have effects in the form of “orange peel”, or the powder particles will repel from the metal and, accordingly, crumble due to high air pressure. Determining the optimal distance between the gun and the metal is actually not easy, as there are many factors to consider: spray setup (voltage, pressure), grounding, product size and shape, etc.

Thickness measurement

It will become a good habit to regularly measure the thickness of the polymer film and adjust the parameters of the spraying unit depending on the obtained indicators. Therefore, it is important to have a thickness gauge in the workshop – it should be applied with a sensor to the painted surface in order to find out the thickness of the resulting coating. The recommended indicator of coating thickness is easy to find on the package. It is different for each material – in structural coatings “crocodile skin, antique, etc.”, the thickness should be greater than in smooth ones.

Without measurements and proper checks, painters can apply twice as much powder material as necessary. Even if there is no visible flaw on the coating, this is a double expense.
