Powder coating: difficulties and how to avoid them
Powder coating materials rarely have any problems in application, transportation, and storage. The process of coating with powder paint is technologically simple and easy to learn. You don’t need to be a painter with 20 years of experience to understand everything and not make critical mistakes. However, there are defects that do not depend on skill in any way — you should know about them.

Reverse ionization
During the painting process, the negative charge of the powder and the positive charge of the metal increase dramatically. Therefore, positively charged ions appear — they make the grains of sand bounce relative to the surface of the object. In this way, the painted layer gets craters. To get rid of this nuisance, reduce the voltage, regularly check the cleanliness of the grounding points and the nozzle of the gun (it sometimes accumulates metal particles). Too thick a coating or close spraying distance can be a problem.
The hopper emits dust
There are many reasons for this: excessive air pressure, clogged filters of the recuperation system, drafts and temperature drops in the spraying area and workshop, too powerful ventilation. Try to adjust the paint supply and air mass intake speed relative to the volume of the spray chamber. Pay attention to the regular replacement of filters and the proper operation of ventilation. To make the temperature uniform throughout the room, install thermal curtains near the door.
Bumps on a polymer film
The small bumps on the plane basically mean that the LFM was a bit wet before painting. Constantly monitor the humidity level in the storage room. The hose is long and thin – then the powder settles in it, and then it is sprayed in lumps. A defective spray gun nozzle also causes this problem.
Pin holes
After hardening, the polymer film has evenly distributed small holes — grease, silicone, and moisture got into the loose mass. Contamination must be detected and removed. Damaged iron with an uneven plane also produces this effect. There is no great need for aggressive cleaning of the structure — a moderate preliminary preparation will be sufficient.
