Ultraviolet and powder coating

The effect of light rays on various chemical substances has been studied by scientists for a long time, and even an ordinary observer notices how fabric, plastic, burns out in the sun detail. And how does the powder coating material react to sunlight? Wear resistance of LFM under conditions of constant direct ultraviolet radiation depends on several factors. “Lacover” strives for our customers to be fully informed about their purchase. Therefore, today’s article is about how powder paints will react to intense lighting.

Influence

Ultraviolet rays contribute to the breakdown of polymer molecules and some dyes. Over the years, the polymer film will lose its flexibility, color, adhesion, and moisture and salinity will begin to penetrate through it. Thus, anti-corrosion will gradually decrease. The first sign of the disappearance of molecular bonds will be the appearance of white spots on the paint. Resins are more or less resistant to this factor, so they must be selected carefully.

Epoxy

The least sunlight-resistant paint is usually not used for products that will be used outdoors. It peels off within 3 – 5 years — in the shortest service life for powder paint materials. It is better to use powders based on epoxy resins as a soil, because this way you can get reliable protection against rust.

Epoxy-polyester

The mixed type of paint and varnish material will be more resistant to UV rays. However, its properties will depend on the ratio of epoxy and polyester component, so they differ greatly in each individual case.

Polyester

One of the most resistant to UV rays, it is mainly used for stairs, railings, baskets for air conditioners, street lights and similar products. Serves for decades, without significant changes in color or protective characteristics.

Acrylic

The not durable enough acrylic variety of paints is vulnerable to scratches and impacts. But under bright sunlight, it retains its original color and shine for a long time.

Polyurethane

The most UV-resistant polyurethane type will not change its appearance for a very long time. However, the price of such powders is much higher than the average on the market.
