Powder coating: how to check the quality?
Although powder paints are extremely durable, it does not hurt to test their quality application. Something can go wrong — residual oxides have weakened adhesion or the powder has overbaked. It can be difficult to make the temperature regime stable, especially when saving on equipment. Also, the polymerization furnace sometimes fails and heats the metal product unevenly. There are many reasons. So let’s start to figure out how to determine a successful coloring.
Testing
There are several tests to determine truly high-quality headlights. It is better to conduct them periodically with test samples to make sure that all the equipment is working properly and LFMs are suitable for use. Problems with grounding, high humidity, incorrect charge – all will definitely affect the polymer film and adhesion. Several tests can be done for different lots — bending, impact and corrosion tests.
Impact resistance
Impacts and damage happen to metal products all the time – they are designed to be durable. Therefore, checking whether the paint withstands impact resistance has become a routine in workshops. To do this, a dent is made on the test plate with a special device, and then it is searched for cracks and chips to check impact resistance.
Bend test
Adhesion plays a huge role, because thanks to it, the coloring material is reliably connected to the surface. To test this sign of quality, paint is applied to a small metal plate and it is strongly bent. After that, carefully observe whether cracks have formed. A good polymer film is strong and flexible enough to withstand bending at a given angle.
Salt fog
The salt fog test is already a classic in powder coating. It is used to check anti-corrosion properties. The painted metal is placed in a humid, salty and warm environment for a regulated number of days. Subsequently, the spread of rust and metal corrosion, if it has appeared, is measured.
