Powder coating: recovery properties

In the process of operation of the structure, many different troubles can happen — cracks, chips, dents. Especially when the product has been used for decades without any paint updates, such loads withstand paints in the form of powder. Recently, scientists have developed a new technology of “self-healing” of scratches on powder paint.

How does it work and what opportunities does it provide?

Problem

Violation of the integrity of the polymer film greatly reduces its protective qualities. Moisture, salinity, acids and other chemicals penetrate through a small crack substances conducive to the development of corrosion. If rust penetrates under the paint, the protection will be broken further and at a fairly fast pace.

For a long time, this problem was solved due to the thickness of the layer, additional application of varnish or a special texture. The last solution is the most popular and effective. Powder coating materials with a “moire” texture form a fairly thick coating and a surface that resembles sandpaper. Such material is often used for trunks of cars, where the plane experiences friction and damage.

Recently, specialists proposed an interesting chemical mechanism for self-healing.

A new solution

Microcapsules that contain linseed oil and benzotriazole in a urea-formaldehyde resin shell are able to paint back damage caused to epoxy paint. A study conducted at Akron State University in Ohio proved the effectiveness of incorporating microcapsules. Varnish material based on such microscopic capsules passed a series of tests — scratch and salt spray tests. The anti-corrosion characteristics were restored in an average of 24 hours. A more stable shell, which does not break down quickly, was obtained by adding graphene to it.

The “self-healing” system will allow the continued use of structures and products for at least several years. Costs for damage caused by rust will be significantly reduced. This method has so far been tested only on epoxy paints, whether it will be effective for other types of paints remains a question.
