Production of powder coating

Powder coating is a special product. The final result completely depends on what is mixed. After all, each component performs a special function.

In today’s article we will identify the main components of the product that will help us make the right choice. Let’s start to scrutinise.

Ingredients

The main substance is resin. Pigment, fillers and other are added to it. They are all responsible for the qualities: color, reliability, structure.

Resins

Partly – refined products of oil industry. These include alcohols and acids. Create a strong film formed by long molecular bonds. Such substances are called polymers.

There are different types:

● epoxy,

● epoxy-polyester,

● acrylic,

● vinyl.

Hence the names of powder paints, so the base of each is clear.

Hardeners

Without a component that would structure the molecules in stable conditions, temperature, the final coating will be uneven, bubbly, with chips. Therefore, the hardener is an important component. It helps the paint to thicken and makes it more stable. SP-TGIC and SP-HAA systems are the most reliable on the market. The latter is produced under the brand name Primid, which has a great success on the market.

Additives

● Spreading agent

Responsible for application: the powder is evenly sprayed, tightly covers the surface.

● Benzoin for degassing.

It is designed so that the gases and air that remain in the mixture get out faster when everything is fused. If you get rid of them too late, there will be a lot of bubbles and other defects.

Fillers

Provide density, shine, amplify resistance. Equalize the thickness of the dye – not too thick or thin. Thanks to them it is not necessary to put an additional layer. This role is performed by barium sulfate, calcite, talc.

Pigments

These are the colors of the paint. Only inorganic dyes, resistant to high temperatures, are used in production. Titanium dioxide creates white and iron oxide makes yellow or red.

Manufacturing process

All components are weighed, thoroughly mixed. Then they are poured into the extruder, where they melt and mix. The resulting mass is pressed into a tape – it is ground into a ready-made powder paint. Thus we get an excellent mixture.
