Epoxy powder coating

An extremely common powder coating material that can be found anywhere, it perfectly protects metal products against the effects of chemical reagents. You’ve definitely come across epoxy paint in your everyday life, but it doesn’t have such a long history. It began to be used in the late 1950s, although there was an invention was developed as early as 1934.

Currently, epoxy resin of the bisphenol A type is used, because it is easier to set the required characteristics during the production process, which largely depend on approver.

At Lacover, we have more than ten years of experience in formulation development and have accumulated important observations.

Dicyandiamide (DICY)

Paints with dicyandiimide usually polymerize for a long time. Therefore, an accelerator substance is often mixed with it at the extrusion stage in order to obtain coloring materials with an acceptable hardening time — 10 – 20 minutes at 180 – 200℃. The essential advantage of the admixture lies in its excellent dispersibility, which is why it is well distributed in the finished powder paint. The ideal concentration depends on the type and amount of pigments, the size of the particles and the friability of the substance itself.

Amines

Hardeners containing amino derivatives greatly speed up the hardening process — 1 – 15 minutes at a temperature of only 140℃ (2 – 20 minutes at 130℃ and half an hour at 120℃). However, due to its chemical activity, it is not too common – it forms quickly compounds with other substances and therefore the paint does not last long.

Phenolic resins

Phenolic resin as part of epoxy systems makes it possible to obtain a polymer film with high cross-linking density, resistance to any solvents, moisture, impacts, scratches, and good plasticity. And the low conductivity of electric current can generally save someone’s life. However, its use has a negative effect for UV resistance, and the painted layer will eventually turn yellow.

Polycarboxylic acids

This substance is rarely added to powder paint materials – only occasionally, to obtain a matte or semi-matte finish or to create a long-lasting powder. The main advantages are good resistance to boiling water and cathodic dissipation (corrosion factor).
