How exactly does powder coating protect metal?
Powder coatings insulate the product from the external environment and its harmful effects — humidity, acids, salts, high temperature. However, this is not the end of the story. Barrier properties differ in different materials due to the chemical nature of the components and their combination.
The company “Lacover” sets the goal for itself to increase competency among its customers — so most problems of powder coating simply will not appear. Knowledge about the variety of anti-corrosion properties of certain coatings will greatly influence your decision.
The initial state of the polymer film
Many protection factors depend on the initial coverage — uniform coverage, high-quality preliminary preparation, etc. Two factors dictate the chemical composition of the paint material — porosity and resistance to electric current. Micropores and cracks cannot be seen with the eye, only under a microscope, but moisture penetrates through them. Conductivity is a factor that can cause electrochemical type of corrosion. Powder paint, for example, conducts current very poorly, but defects on the painted surface reduce the resistance of the system. Electrons will leave the metal atoms, and thus rust will form.
Reliable coatings
If you look at liquid paint materials under a microscope, you will see whole patterns of pores and cracks. They quickly begin to conduct weak currents, therefore rust protection is reduced in a short time. The most uniform and solid coatings are polyester and epoxy paint — if used correctly applying their layer lasts for tens of years and degrades extremely slowly. It has an incredibly small number of microscopic pores, so the products will be insulated as much as possible. For even greater reliability, an epoxy primer is applied to the structure, and any other type of powder that meets the requirements is applied on top.
