Powder coating of steel

Powder coating has many advantages. It better than liquid protects metals from rust, mechanical and chemical negative effects. At the same time powder paint has a huge number of different colors and textures. Therefore, powder coating of steel is the best solution to protect the material and give it aesthetic appearance.

Advantages of powder paint

Powder coating is popular because it:

  • Strong
  • Resistant
  • Resistant to chemical, corrosion and weathering
  • Has strong adhesion
  • Dense

In addition, the powder coating is elastic. Therefore, when bending steel sheets, the paint is not damaged, does not crack or come down. Heat-resistant steel paint is resistant to high temperatures. Powder paint is suitable for painting products that are constantly exposed to high temperatures or in contact with fire, such as braziers and fireplaces.

Properly applied coating can retain properties and normal appearance for up to 20 years.

Painting technology

Now let’s deal with technology. For example, how to paint steel in black?

Initially, the product is cleaned, degreased and dried. Then the black paint is sprayed onto the surface with a gun in the spray chamber. Due to the extraction in the chamber, the powder, which is not settled, passes the filtration and goes back to work. After application of the powder, the steel is placed in a polymerization furnace. In it, the powder particles are melted and solidified, forming a final coating. The colored product needs to be cooled down a bit after baking and can already be used.

We emphasize: the most important stage is preliminary preparation. On a dirty and greasy surface, the powder will be bad or not at all.

Difficulties in coating

Stainless steel even uncoated looks good and has excellent performance. But powder coating gives it additional decorative properties. This is especially important if you need to implement custom architectural and design solutions.

But painting stainless steel is not easy, unlike galvanized steel. The fact is that it has low adhesion, and to ensure the quality of products, the paint should be applied with a very thin layer. Liquid paints will generally come down from such products in a few years, and if it is used in the street, then even faster. Therefore, for stainless steel painting, it is recommended to use only powder paint. However, high-quality painting of stainless steel products is possible only with proper and thorough preparation of the surface for coating. In order to increase adhesion, it is better to phosphate the metal during the preparation phase.
