The history of powder coating technology development

Today powder paint is known as a paint and varnish material with high performance, protective and decorative qualities. Therefore, it is actively used in a variety of areas: from painting of furniture frames to car wheels. These coatings significantly extend the life of the products and make them very attractive from the outside.

Background of the invention powder coating

Powder paint began to develop, as an alternative to other paint materials, in the 1950s. The invention of the new technology was needed for economic reasons. Then new technologies began to emerge in other areas. Pipeline transport was actively used. And the pipes had to have a quality coating. Naturally, at that time known paints could not provide the required coating properties. So it was necessary to invent something new.

And buyers, meanwhile, could already afford a little tidying up and choose a custom product design, use only safe materials.

In addition, all manufacturers wanted to improve the quality of painting their products.

That is, powder paint was designed to improve the appearance of painted products, increase the durability of the coating, reduce material consumption and damage to the environment.

The first attempts to use powder dyeing technology began in 1950. As early as one thousand nine hundred and fifty-five, the first patents were granted in Germany.

At the same time, they developed an electrostatic method for applying it to products. In 1963, the first electrostatic sprays appeared in Germany. Powder paint painters began to apply them very quickly, so they began to investigate this area with even greater enthusiasm.

In the 60’s also developed an anodizing system, invented “metallics” and resistant to negative external influences powders. Although, they say, something similar to anodizing was still in ancient civilizations. Some attempts to create powder paint were made by the Egyptians in the third century BC, by the Indians and the first Americans. The Incas crushed precious stones and cast dust, and then decorated it with their own products. And in Delhi, a gilded, powder-like column stands at the mosque of Kuvat-il-Islam, created in about 415 AD.

And the first full-fledged powder paint plant was made in the United States in 1974.

Powder paint is considered to be the most modern and durable coating for metal products. Developments in this area are ongoing. There are already known methods of applying powder to MDF. It is possible that powder products can be covered with absolutely any material very soon.
