Faraday cage effect

A fence closed in space, formed of electrically conductive material, is a headache for many painters and manufacturers of metal structures. A problem for some, but a huge benefit for others. This effect, for example, improves the quality of MRI studies, because it does not allow electromagnetic fields to penetrate into the device. And there are ways to get rid of such a nuisance, such as avoiding certain areas on metal products with paint.

Today in the article we will tell you how to overcome the sometimes stubborn Faraday “cage”.

Why does it occur?

Professional painters or those who deal with powder coatings have noticed that recesses and corners can be difficult to paint over. The powder simply does not reach these places and does not stay there. All due to the fact that due to the difference in charges, a kind of “hole” is formed in the electrostatic field. No matter how much paint is applied to the concave surface, it still settles in the wrong place, and the defect becomes more visible. Strange vortices may appear, ugly from the point of view of aesthetics and threatening to coating strength.

Because the powder is held to the surface by static charge, such areas cannot be painted. Moisture accumulates in these corners, and later rust easily appears.

How to overcome the problem?

To avoid the disadvantage, it is necessary to control the electrostatic field. Make the voltage lower, try spraying further or closer. Monitoring the charge level of the powder mass will also help. A high-quality device, most likely, contains such an option. The air flow must be strong enough to carry the powder into the recesses, but not too powerful. Because in this way the worker will simply blow the paint all over the shop – this is a waste of time, effort, and money. Look at your equipment more carefully – there are many useful functions that will allow you to get rid of difficult situations.

In difficult cases, triboelectric equipment can be used. It does not create ionization, have no strong voltages and will help achieve an even layer on surfaces of various shapes. The cost of such equipment is usually lower than the usual one — it won’t hurt to have an extra one, just in case.
